Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise as just a young girl. The aunt was on in the evening shift as a nurse, so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be an avenue for action. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself through artwork. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has been for generations. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood California. DuVernay was a college student when she became interested in production for the broadcast media. Her career began as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to look-out and search for the house for a specific Jury member. The duties she was required to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
